Problem with selection cursor in linux with compositing enabled
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

Some cursors in Blender 3d when kde 3.5.x have the composite options enabled (using shadows, even more with transparencies which causes to see always blender transparent almost with -W option) or using compiz-fusion, are invisible and slowdowns blender (for example pressing B key for group selection causes that the horizontal and vertical line are invisible). It is a important bug because the use of compositing options in desktop environments in Linux is growing, and it will be ever more with kde 4.0.

Turn off the fancy cursor stuff like shadows.

Do not use blender and compiz-fusion together. They do not like each other.

I know that the problem is with shadows, but the use of compiz-fusion or KDE4 with compositing enable is inevitable, I think we should find a solution in one year maximum (before KDE4 becomes popular and Compiz-Fusion is stable) to this problem.

It may be inevitable, but the combination will not work well until they get the bugs
out of compiz. Once that happens blender will work well with exotic window managers.
Until then, expect problems when using them together.

In the meantime, the best place to report bugs will be with compiz or kde4.

This problem happens with solid 3.5.x composite shadow too. How we know that it is inevitable with Blender and it is caused by the windows manager?

Now KDE 4.0 is here and, as I predicted, the bug happens with its OpenGl acceleration effects enable (it enables by default if detect acceleration support I think). Anyway I think that the user will not want to remove all the little effects and acceleration only to avoid this bugs, It would be like ask to MacOSX user to remove all its effects, shadows etc.... Now it is becoming standard, and I suppose that if it is only this bug the problem it couldn't be too difficult to solve it.

I updated to Kubuntu 8.04 Beta, seems that with the latest Nvidia drivers is solved. Tested on KDE 4.0.3 with the effects on and in KDE 3.5.9 with composite effects on too. Thanks for all.

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
