Blender 2.80 crashing when saving some files in Sculpting mode
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: OS. 10.14.6 (18G95)

Blender Version
Broken: Version 2.80 (2.80 2019-07-29)
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
In Sculpting Mode, while trying to save a file, the beachball goes on forever, and my computer crashes. Same thing happens when I try to reopen that same file. Once this happens, I can never reopen these crash-causing files again.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).
I am attaching the lastest file that created the problem. Earlier, files of 75 MB caused the same crashes of my computer. I am not a techie and heardly understand what you want me to tell you other than what I have written above. So I don't know how to better help you to reproduce the crashes.

Event Timeline

Can confirm that file quickly consumes big amounts of RAM trying to open, going into swap here...
Needs further investigation...

How much RAM does it need in your case? It seems to work fine in my case. If the numbers in htop are correct, Blender does not use more than 2gb for the file.

It eats up all I have [16GB, starting from less than 4GB used] really quickly, I kill the process than to not freeze entirely...
@Jacques Lucke (JacquesLucke) : have you tried saving and loading again?
(will also try a reboot here to see if that changes anything...)

Ah, that was my fault. I had OpenSubdiv disabled. After turning it on, it uses a lot more RAM. (I killed it before I ran out of memory, so I don't know how much exactly).

So the issue just seems to be too much geometry here.

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) lowered the priority of this task from 90 to 30.Sep 20 2019, 1:21 PM

Seems to be the Icosphere object in that file.
I can append everything else without problem...

@Marie TROPE ZANZAL (MarieHZ18): could you let us know what the modifiers on that object look like [how many subdivisions etc, screenshot might help...]? (esp. the Multires / Subdivision Surface modifiers?)

Thank you for helping me. Where would I find the modifiers used for that specific file? ... if this is what you are asking... I know where the modifiers are in Blender. I am not sure what you are asking.

  • Open that file
  • select Icosphere
  • show us Properties Editor > Modifier Properties tab > screenshot of those modifiers (expanded)
  • also: do you still have problems when these modifiers are disabled for the viewport?

(it might very well be that these are just generating too much geometry as @Jacques Lucke (JacquesLucke) suggested -- which would not be a bug really)

This file doesn't open on my computer. When I try, the whole thing crashes.

Bastien Montagne (mont29) changed the task status from Unknown Status to Archived.Oct 1 2019, 9:19 PM
Bastien Montagne (mont29) claimed this task.

Not much we can do here, there are some limits to the amount of geometry that can be managed.
