Cannot reproduce here.

For me, clicking on this

corresponds to hitting 1 on the Numpad.
Are you saying this is reversed for you?

That being said, your gpu is also not officially supported anymore
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html
https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/

No, this is not reversed for me.

According to the graphics representation the Green, Red or Blue DOT represents the negative axis. The Green, Red or Blue Arrows represent the Positive axis.

For the Red arrow X (Numpad 3) and the Blue arrow Z (Numpad 7) this is correct.
For the Green arrow Y (Numpad 1) this is not.

There might be a reason for this, but indeed FRONT/BACK seem to be not in line with the others...
But this is also true for the menu entries [View > Viewpoints]

CC @William Reynish (billreynish): Any reason why we are mapping it like this?

  • FRONT [without modifier key] is looking down the positve axis
  • TOP [without modifier key] is looking down the negative axis
  • RIGHT [without modifier key] is looking down the negative axis

this might all be defined like this for a right-handed cartesian coordinate system, I am not aware of this though, will leave up to others to decide...

@Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) I can't see any inconsistency here.
Should we close this task or is somebody willing to find inconsistencies and fix them?

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) triaged this task as Low priority.Jan 16 2020, 2:07 PM

Well, I'll try other words:

  • if in the widget you are using the "dots", you will always be looking in the positive direction (consistent)
  • if in the widget you are using the "arrows", you will always be looking in the negative direction (consistent)
  • if you use Numpad 3 or 7, you'll be looking in the negative direction, Numpad 1 will look in the positive direction (inconsistent)
  • (above results in shortcuts for the "dots" in the widget: green: Numpad 1; red: Ctrl Numpad 3; blue: Ctrl Numpad 7)

Like I said before, I cannot judge if this is an issue (it is not for me personally), looks inconsistent though [UI-Team should probably handle this].

Julian Eisel (Severin) claimed this task.

The way these things are mapped is a historical decision that would be very hard to change now. I think it is indeed an issue of the right-handed, Z-up coordinate system. Any change here would have major impacts, even if they were easy to do. So this is not just a visual issue, it's the definition of our coordinate system that causes this inconsistency.

So thanks for the report, but this is not something that's likely to change. Closing as this is not a bug or known issue.
