Blender crashes while snapping
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

It's the umpteenth time blender crashes whilst snapping. Almost all crashes happen when in "closest" snap mode, when snapping on an axis.

There is a thread on BA about this
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=102371&highlight=snap+crash
it somehow seems I'm the only one with this problem.

Crashing occurs without anything on the console.

Appended the latest file which I'm working on (a set of 5.1 creative speakers), but crashes occur in all my files. In this file I'm just doing some "retopo" work. I'm extruding the small edges and superpose them on the already existing ones to later on be able to retopo all of it with higher resolution. So all extruding is done together with snapping.

Python 2.5 is fully installed.
I'm using the latest release candidate.
I have 1Gb ram on a P4 machine with an ATI card which doesn't cause lag.

And I'm fed up with this. In under 5 minutes I crashed 3 times. I have to save before each snap, this isn't the way to go imo.

Hope the cause can be found.

Event Timeline

I tried using snap closest and don't get a crash under linux. Can you give some more information? What OS are you using? What are the exact steps needed to reproduce the problem with the attached blend file?

Os sorry, I'm under Windows Xp Media Center

Exact steps, it just crashes all the time, without any real methodology about it. I select one or more verts, (snapping is mostly already on), I push G then sometimes an axes pull them to where I almost want, and then get my mouse close to a vert and push ctrl. And sometimes it works during half an hour without anny problem, and sometimes it crashes the first time I try. When it crashes, blender freezes for a moment and then I get the little windows window telling me an error has occurred and that blender should be terminated. The console never shows any problem.

From the thread and your complaints, this is specific to your machine. My SWAG is you are dealing with a graphics driver problem. ATI on-board graphics by any chance? Usual fixes are turning down hardware acceleration, latest drivers/older drivers, etc. Always turn of anti-aliasing.

Y B,

can you confirm whether it is an opengl error by following Stephens suggestions and reporting back?

I'd like to isolate the bug here a little:

Does it only crash with snap closest or does it happen with all snapping modes?

Are you trying to snap to an external mesh and if so, does it also crash if you only snap to the current mesh?

Any more details could help pinpoint where the problem is.

I stopped using a different atioglxx and have returned to use the standard one that "provided" with catalyst control ans haven't experienced any crash since.

And trying blender without AA is like suicide, ever tried it? You can see anything.

So it was probably GPU related, but seems to work now.

So sorry for this report that wasn't a bug but due to a bad driver I used.

Thanks for your time.
