Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
In sculpt mode if the displace modifier is active the brush behavior is unpredictable, especially with the smooth brush.
It looks like that the sculpting mode takes account of the mesh after being modified by the modifier and start the sculpt over it.
'm reporting this because in other modes the modifier and the actual edit of the mesh are handled as separate thing.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open any of the attached files and try to smooth or grab as done in the video

thanks!

I opened the file but either I don't know how to reproduce it or the problem seems to have been resolved.
@Massimiliano Puliero (mmaaxx), please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606), can you confirm?

Richard Antalik (ISS) changed the task status from Needs Triage to Confirmed.Mar 4 2020, 3:43 AM

I can confirm this with smooth brush (even though in video smooth brush is used while draw brush tool is selected?).

Removing modifier helps
Enabling dyntopo helps as well

@Richard Antalik (ISS)
yes, press Shift automatically switch to smooth brush, it is a common workflow.

Ofcourse turn off the modifier solves the problem, the issue infact involve the smooth brush+the modifier, excluding one of the two terms prevent the bug indeed.

Thanks.

Increasing the strength of the Displace modifier, makes the issue even more visible.
While the behavior is not very nice, I assume this has benefits in other cases... Could be that this is a known issue.

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) what do you think?

Bastien Montagne (mont29) changed the subtype of this task from "Report" to "Known Issue".Oct 14 2020, 10:17 AM

This issue has not been resolved and it is still there as can be seen by my report. It would be nice if the sculpt brushes do not take modified positions and just work on the mesh instead, at least having this as an option would be nice. As of now the final surface positions come out very uggly when one adds certain modifiers on the mesh.
