Cycles render engine not working with GPU compute
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: WIndows 10
Graphics card: 1660ti

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-03-12 05:06, hash: 375c7dc4caf4, type: Release
build date: 2020-03-12, 15:41:08
Worked: NA

When i select the GPU compute on the cycles render engine under render properties, the viewport shading: rendered stops working.
Most of the times it is a freeze frame of the last rendered viewport from the CPU, other times its just a blank workspace.
I can move my model around, pan, zoom etc, but the model is not visible.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Start blender
  2. Open project

  1. Change to layout tab

  1. Change device to GPU compute under render properties

  1. Change viewport shading to rendered

I zoomed out and moved the view to different perspective. You can see the actual model of the donuts in the top right of the rendered donut.

My blender preferences are given below

After deselecting and selecting the GPU compute, the rendered donut is lost

Are you able to try updating your GPU drivers? https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
Are you also able to test Blender 2.83 and 2.90? https://builder.blender.org/download/

Yes i have the latest nvidia studio drivers. I have also tried with the game ready drivers. Same results.

I have not tested with the 2.83 or the 2.90 versions. I will give these a try and get back to you

@Shankha (Shankha) I'm sorry I'm unable to offer much help. It's just that so many people that use GPU rendering don't experience this issue. For example, I don't experience any issues with my GTX 1050ti.
Hopefully someone else is able to help you with this issue.
But you should defiantly test Blender 2.83 and 2.90 just in case your issues is fixed with those.
Another thing you could try is selecting from the top of Blender "File>Defaults>Load Factory Settings" then open your donut file and retest. (You will need to re-enable your GPU in preferences)

@Alaska (Alaska)
I tried all the things suggested-

  1. Tried 2.83
  2. 2.90
  3. Factory reset

I also tried some other versions

  1. The portable version
  2. 2.7b (couldn't open file)

I thought maybe its an issue with my donut file, so i created a new project with the default cube. Tried the GPU compute

None of them work. All have same issue

I tried just changing to GPU compute and pressed F12 to render. I get the following error message

CUDA Error at cuCtxCreate: Misaligned address

Any idea what this might be due to?

Found a solution!

Seems like overclocked GPU doesn't play well with blender.

I had a 190Mhz overclock on my gpu.
I reverted it and GPU compute works fine
