Short description of error
Can not edit the cloth cache inside of particle edit mode. I am aware of the fade time error inside of options, I am not using fade time I am purely just seeing if what the manual says is possible, editing a cloth sim cache

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. add a cloth sim
  2. Bake cloth sim
  3. go into particle edit mode
  4. no way to edit cloth sim

Does the manual say that it is possible to edit a cloth sim cache?

This used to be possible in 2.79, yes.

First hurdle is that the overlay engine is "focused" on drawing paths for hair caches, and from quick glance just does not support drawing these for cloth caches.
Thus we are running into this debug message:

Error getting evaluated particle system for edit.

It is a bit like for emitter particles where we get a bit further, but also stop functioning at some point (with this debug message), see T77096, T59583:

Hairs are not in edit mode

That being said, editing the cloth/softbody cache was working at some point (without drawing the paths) prior to 2.80 release, see my comment here T64843#683046, I will check when we lost ability to do that...

Since this is such a long standing issue throughout the 2.8 series, and with Particle Nodes around the corner, I have the following questions:

  • will Particle Editmode be a thing in emitter particles with particle nodes?
  • should Particle Editmode be supported still for cloth/softbodies (even if this will not be supported for particles)? Should it be called Cache Editmode then? Would it only make sense if we also draw the paths?

I think point cache editing mostly needs to be rewritten. For meshes it should go though the same code paths as shape key editing and work in edit and sculpt mode, rather than a particle edit mode.

I would only look into that once we are further along with replacing the old particle system.
