Short description of error
when I try to join mirror images one gets larger and distorted.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
in edit mode I deleted half of the head, in the object mode I duplicated the half head and mirrored it on Y axis, I placed the two halves together and tried to join the two halves together. the result was the original half grew bigger and distorted.

Are you able to provide the .blend file for us to investigate?

yes, here it is Imm3.blend

Actually, looking at the image, it seems the issue is most likely caused by the solidify modifier. If I was to take a guess, the normal of one side of the head are backwards. In edit mode, select the part of the head that grows when you join the two and press Alt+N then select Flip. Hope this helps.

Yeah, looking at the file the issue is your normals.

This is not a bug with Blender. I will close this report.

The exact steps for fixing this are as follows:

  1. Select the right side of the face.
  2. Press Ctrl+A and select Scale.
  3. Enter edit mode on the right side of the face.
  4. Press A.
  5. Press Alt+N and select Flip.
  6. Go back to object mode and select the left side of the face.
  7. Press Ctrl+A and select Scale.
  8. Select the left side of the face then the right side of the face.
  9. Join the two with Ctrl+J.
  10. Play around with the settings in the solidify modifier until you get what you like.
