Incremental Transformation Does Not Match Grid.

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 7 64bit Pro
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 970 GTX

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83, 691a1e3357e1, Beta, 2020-05-29
Worked: 2.79

Short description of error
When in any Isometric view (front, side, top, etc) if we zoom in enough to see the smaller grid lines and hold Ctrl while moving an object or verts, it does not snap to the smaller grid until we have zoomed in even further. A User would expect to be able to use the smaller grid increments after zooming in enough to see it. What is the point in showing it if we cannot use it until until further zoom?

[2.79] In 2.79 it would start snapping to the smaller grid as soon as it was visible.

[2.83] In 2.83 we have to zoom in even further in order to activate snapping to the visible smaller grid.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. In any 3D scene press 5 to switch to isometric view. and then 1, 3 or 7 (for front, side or top view...does not matter which)
  2. Select an object and move it while holding Ctrl. Notice it snaps to the grid as expected.
  3. Zoom in until we see the smaller grid lines appear. Repeat step 2. Notice it still snaps to bigger grid instead of the visible small grid lines.
  4. Zoom in again. Notice that NOW it starts to snap to the smaller grid lines.

Event Timeline

It is difficult to know which is the best transition point.
The transition was based on where the grid subdivisions begin to appear. Which is different from 2.79.

(Note that the comparison of these videos is not fair. The grid in 2.79 starts out being visually larger than in 2.80).

Is it a matter of being fair or unfair? It simply does not start working when it becomes visible for reference as it did before.

This makes it feel more like eye candy rather than a working function. Maybe it should not be visible until it is usable. While zooming in, its like it shows up 1 increment too soon possibly. Again, what would be the point of this if on purpose?

Its a minor thing but I'm hyper-focusing on it since its the reason for the report.

Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) changed the task status from Needs Triage to Needs Information from User.Jun 3 2020, 4:01 PM

I was unable to reproduce the problem either with long distances or with short distances.
What unit system are you using?

I'm only using the default settings. Not sure how to check units.

I think it is Meters if im looking in the right place.

I can just start a new blender scene with default cube, switch to front view and use middle mouse scroll to zoom in/out. There are 2 levels of zoom that I can see the smaller grid without it actually working till i zoom in one increment further.

Number of steps for Zoom is not a good way to indicate the problem (if there really is a problem).

From the video it seems that at 2.83 the transition occurs later.
But from the GIF of my previous comment, the transition happens before.

Could you compare these different versions of blender but with similar grid distance?
CTrl + Dragging with MMB can help adjust the distance.
