Blender hangs and closes after remesh modifier

Operating system: Windows 10 professional
Graphics card: GeForce 750 Ti
Processor: Intel Xeon E3 1246 V3

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c044, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected) 2.83 LTS

Short description of error Adding a remesh modifier after applying 2 levels of subsurface modifier

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. Open Blender 3d.
  2. Delete the default cube.
  3. Add Suzanne.
  4. Add 2 levels of subsurface modifier
  5. Press apply.
  6. Add Remesh modifier (voxel)
  7. Reduce voxel size by sliding left
  8. Blender freezes and closes by itself after some time.

I'm personally unable to replicate in Blender 2.90 rBaed11c673efe (2020-06-06 14:18) on Linux.

Are you able to provide information about what version you're using? Are you also able to test with the latest version of 2.90.0? http://builder.blender.org/

Thanks for the report. It appears this crashes because Blender ran out of memory.

While we want to improve Blender to handle such cases memory gracefully, this is not currently considered a bug.

This occurs because as you reduce the voxel size, more and more geometry is generated and as more and more geometry is created, more and more memory is taken up.
