Blender crashes immediately when you access "Material Preview Mode" or "Render Preview Mode", else textures are purple.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Use the default Cube scene.
Go to the Shader Editor and appended an Image Texture node to the default material. I dragged in a JPG called "testmap.jpg".
Connect this node to Base Color.
Return to 3D Viewport.
Try to use the "Material Preview Mode". The block will be purple or Blender will crash.
Try to use the "Render Preview Mode". The block will be purple. show the texture correctly, or crash.
