Windows 10 May Update (v2004) and “Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling” break Cycles GPU rendering
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 v2004
Graphics card: 2 x NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti Founder Edition

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c044, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
2.82a
2.83

Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I tested the problem in many Blender release and no one can render anymore in Cycles GPU mode.
I had to disable this new Windows feature to be able to use Cycles GPU rendering.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Enable "Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling" (Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics Settings) in Windows 10 v2004 and try to render anything using Cycles GPU mode.
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Can you report the version of your nVidia driver? Several news outlets mention that the first driver to support this feature is 451.48

Hi Jesse Y,
the NVIDIA driver that I am using are the latest Studio v. 451.48.
Enabling the new "Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling" the GPU rendering in Cycles don't work anymore.
Disabling this feature revert GPU rendering in Cycles to normal condition.

I'm not seeing this effect on my setup,

Nvidia quadro rtx 6000, Xeon w-3235 6c 6t 32gb ram.

Windows 10 2004, latest nvidia driver 451.48

Cycles still works in cuda in 2.83 and cuda or optix in 2.9a

Might be an issue with dual cards? Also what's a gtx100 ti? Is that a spelling error and should be 1080?

Have you enabled the new Windows feature "Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling"?

Yeah I activated it specifically to test if it provided any benefit in blender performance

Hi David (captnseraph),
yes, I have two 1080Ti, I correct this in the master task.
I double check again and I can confirm that with my PC configuration, enabling “Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling”, the GPU rendering not work anymore causing freeze of Blender.
My current PC configuration is a little bit old but everything run fine until this latest Windows feature.
Actually my PC config is:
Motherboard: MSI X79A-GD65-8D
CPU: Intel i7-4930K
RAM: 32GB Corsair
HDD: 4 x 1TB WD RE4
VGA: 2 x ASUS GTX 1080Ti Founder Edition
PSU: Corsair 1200 Watt
DISPLAY: 32" Philips + 27" Asus connected by HDMI to one card
All latest drivers installed, evertything run fine.

@Umberto Celentano (umbcel) does this happen when you click on File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings? You may need to setup rendering device after this.
