I should point out that parenting the the object to the camera is not something that I knowingly did; not at all something that I wanted—it ruined my editing session.
If it happened, it happened because of some other strangeness. Possibly to do with 'lock camera to view' and 'fly/walk', because that's what I was doing; positioning the camera when suddenly a section of the house began to move with the view.

(Blender user since version 2.42)

Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) claimed this task.

Thanks for the report. but this is not a bug. When lock to view is on, the camera's transform is updated to match the view's, that's what the setting does. So it's expected that the transform of the camera's child objects would change too.

I can understand that, but I did not set any objects as a child of the camera—if this happened, then that's the bug.

*Note that I did not set the current title for this report; it was changed by user Richard Antalik.

At the time, I suspected a problem with Lock View To Camera, because that's what I selected, and suddenly part of the house model began moving with the camera rotation.

Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) changed the subtype of this task from "Report" to "Bug".

Oh, I'm sorry, I tried the reverse-- made the camera the cube's parent.

I do think the title makes more sense, it doesn't really have anything to do with whether the object is selected or not.

But I think this is indeed a bug. Sorry for misunderstanding your report.

Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) changed the subtype of this task from "Bug" to "Report".

Okay, there's actually a preference for this behavior in the "Navigation" tab in preferences. This is pretty confusing though, and the 14th bug report we've received about this. So I made a patch that would hopefully make this clearer: D9239
