Material keyframes [on nodes] not showing up on Dope Sheet (or any other Animation Screen) if the nodes are unselected [Selected Only option]

Description

System Information
Operating system: Darwin-19.5.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M OpenGL Engine NVIDIA Corporation 4.1 NVIDIA-14.0.32 355.11.11.10.10.143

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.1, branch: master, commit date: 2020-06-25 09:47, hash: rB8289fc688b3e
same result on 2.90.0 Alpha July 07, 23:17:27- afcb41a0aaaf
Worked: N/A

Short description of error
Some "Image as Planes" objects don't show up in the the Dopesheet despite keyframing the Alpha
However, when I deselect "Only Show Selected" I can see the objects and their keyframes.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I can't work out how to reproduce outside this .blend file

The "Image as Planes" objects that don't show up are:

Alto1
Alto2
Bas
Gtr
Pno
Tbn1
Tbn2
Tbn3
Tbn4
Tpt1
Tpt4

But these "Image as Planes" objects show up in the Dope Sheet as expected:
Baritone
Drm
Tpt2
Tpt3

Can you simplify this file to include just 1 object?

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) changed the task status from Needs Information from User to Confirmed.Jul 9 2020, 11:21 AM

This is because blender apparently only shows keyframes of selected nodes [so it it not enough to select the object].
So when opening your file, I can

  • go to the Shading workspace
  • select the Principled BSDF node
  • return to the Animation workspace
  • keyframes are there

@Sybren A. Stüvel (sybren) : is this by design?

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) renamed this task from Some Objects not showing up on Dope Sheet (or any other Animation Screen) to Material keyframes [on nodes] not showing up on Dope Sheet (or any other Animation Screen) if the nodes are unselected [Selected Only option].Jul 9 2020, 11:24 AM

From what I can see from @Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk)'s investigation is that the "Only Show Selected" is also applied to shader nodes. This makes sense, but since the dopesheet isn't aware of the other editors that are open, it has no way of knowing whether you're looking at the General/Layout workspace (and thus want to see all animated properties of the currently selected objects, including its shading nodes) or at the Shading workspace (and thus want to see only selected nodes).

There are many properties in Blender that are not directly bound to any particular selected object. This means that they will never show up when "Only Show Selected" is enabled. As far as I can see this is by design, but if it's inconsistent or unclear why this is happening there could be room for improvement.

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) closed this task as Archived.Jul 9 2020, 11:40 AM
Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) claimed this task.

OK, so this is not really against design [one just has to know how blender behaves here - wasnt aware of this myself].
I think this has room for improvement [as in the majority of situations, I would say the user would expect this to show based on object selection], but the issue reported here is a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior. Closing as this bug tracker is only for bugs and errors. Thx reporting anyways!

Thanks for your help!

I hadn't realised it was an issue of selection within the Node Editor and couldn't find anyone with the same problem online.

I think my confusion arose because you can very easily animate away on Object Materials and never deselect the Nodes but it's also very easy to deselect when tweaking another Node and not realise that the Node selection was the only reason you could see the Node Keyframes when the Object is selected.

Totally agree that this is 'feature' not a bug.

Thanks!
