Description

Using Solidify with boolean modifier closes hole / unexpected results

I'm using Blender 2.9, Ubuntu 18.04

I was testing the differences between 2.83 and 2.9 using the Solidify and Boolean modifier and found an issue with some objects.
I was following this video
https://youtu.be/qEtIACrEk-I?t=229

I tried to increase the Thickness value gradually and the hole closes up before I get to 0.2mm for thickness see test1.gif video / animation below

I also tried Flipping normals but that prevents the bolt threads from increasing in size to 0.2mm see test2.gif video / animation below

I've also attached the Blend file

Please download development build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ and use exact solver method on boolean modifier. Does that olve your issue?

The issue is still happening using the version you told me to try 2.91 alpha see animation / video attached / File

It also has issues when I try it with flipped normals enabled see video / animation below

In both those gifs "mode" is still set to "simple." Try "Exact."

Note that exact calculation are considerably slower than simple floating point boolean operations and if the solidify modifier is producing a self intersecting mesh, you will also need to enable the "self" checkbox on the boolean or it still won't work. Enabling self intersections is also MUCH slower. Expect to wait like 15-30 seconds.

Thanks but I just found a bug with that to if I try and change the "Thickness" value more than twice It causes Blender 2.91.0 alpha to fully crash. But it is an Alpha

Can you report crash? We need report for alpha versions too.

I forgot to say, that you also need to enable "Self" checkbox to allow self-intersections. That way this case woks for me pretty well. It's slow though, but it is a limitation.

Ok should I start / open another ticket for the crash? or just edit this one
