Please upload simple example .blend file.

If this rig has both object and bone constraints, it might also be good to try a fresh build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ (or 2.90.0 from https://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.90/)
2.90.1 has a bug with constraints in posemode unfortunately.

I think it might it's just like Philipp Oeser stipulated something to do with constraints, rigify and pose mode.
Yes. the object has bone constraints generated by rigify.
Blender crashed again today just trying to paint weights.
Please Richard Anatalik find a simple example blend file attached.
Hopefully, you can recreate the problem.

So, did you try a fresh build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ (or 2.90.0 from https://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.90/)?

I cannot reproduce a crash (exact repro steps from opening that file might help as well)

Yes, I have just tried Blender v2.90.0 and don't seem to be getting any crashes to do with either weight painting or selecting bones in pose mode.

I thought that regenerating a rigify rig armatures with constraints meant that old ones are overwritten (if one selects this choice) leaving only armature. However, one still has to manually delete older versions of armatures.
The blender file I sent you had about 10 old armatures listed, which I deleted before posting.
The attached picture should explain what I mean.
In the picture attached there are old armatures highlighted in red, which need deleting.
This might be impacting the crashes, I'm having. Thanks.

Before looking into this further:
Please also check a build from https://builder.blender.org/download/, if this is no issue in 2.90.0 and a fresh build, there is no use in hunting this bug for 2.90.1 only.

Okay I'll endeavour to do that.
I've had one crash with 2.90.0 already but will only report if it persists.
Nonetheless, my workaround is to hope assigning automatic weights will suffice,
avoiding manual painting, which should limit crashes at this time.
Thank you.
