Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.1, branch: master, commit date: 2020-09-23 06:43, hash: rB3e85bb34d0d7
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
ngons make random glitch in multires modifier. I think it's because ngons change their hidden edge on some multires operations like apply base.

happens by random on apply base on meshes with Ngons on multires

I know I should avoid ngons but it would be good if the modifier print out a warning when you have Ngons. I totally forgot it on this model.

Mind sharing the .blend so we have a chance to reproduce?

I manage to reproduce it on another model:

  1. make a model with an ngon
  2. do multires and go high like 4-5 levels
  3. on multires, do change on ngon, apply base
  4. on multires, go lower do changes on ngon, apply base
  5. go back higher, see your mesh glitch out.

I can see that the mesh has a problem, but I didn't understand what you meant by: "on multires, do change on ngon, apply base".
Do you do this in sculpt mode?

I tried to sculpt the mesh but I can't reproduce the problem.

yeah just keep your focus on the area that ngone is and on sculpt mode make a change there and apply the change on base model (the button on multires)

update: ok here is another way I found just right now:

  1. made a cylinder
  2. gone in sculpt mode
  3. pressed ctrl+4 for fast multires modifier
  4. this happened!

I reproduced this bug in the informed version, but not the latest daily build, so it appears the bug has been fixed already.

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

If the problem persists, please let us know so we can re-open the report. Don't forget to mention the specific version you tested again.

Still broken in new alpha. 2.92.0 Alpha from today
did the cylinder test:

even did factory reset on it with same results.

Hi.
Yes, it is still reproducible with Multires. You can use a cone or a cylinder as a base mesh.

Pablo Dobarro had already marked this entry as a known bug:

Thanks for the info @YAFU (YAFU)
Apparently it is a duplicate of the T77261
Strange that I can't reproduce the problem on master.
I will investigate a little more later.
