Sculpt: masks / face sets invisible in X-ray mode
Confirmed, NormalPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10

Blender Version
Broken: 2.91.0

Sculpt mask is invisible in X-ray view mode, but you can still paint the mask while in Xray.
This makes it hard to trace the background image when masking.

Event Timeline

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) changed the task status from Needs Triage to Confirmed.Dec 27 2020, 2:31 PM

Can confirm the behavior.
XRay drawing seems to be a bit inconsistent across modes:

Sculpt with XRay:

  • Sculpt Vertex colors draw
  • FaceSets dont draw
  • Masks dont draw

Vertex Paint mode with XRay:

  • Vertex colors draw

Weight Paint mode with XRay:

  • Weights draw [on top with full opacity and without shading]

@Jeroen Bakker (jbakker): is this by design?

Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) renamed this task from Sculpt mask invisible in X-ray mode to Sculpt: masks / face sets invisible in X-ray mode.Dec 27 2020, 2:32 PM

This is still an issue in 2.93 beta. Even the slightest bit of transparency and the mask/face set disappears.

Julien Kaspar (JulienKaspar) changed the subtype of this task from "Report" to "Known Issue".

I'll tag this as a known issue. Overlays for surfaces are not supported in various modes when Xray is enabled, unless they completely replace the drawing of the object like in Weight Paint mode.
I'd like this to be addressed with a proper design to improve Xray and overlays while in sculpt mode (Or any other mode).
