Every following things I'm goind to say only applies in Object mode.

With the box select tool, every object that have a one polygon inside the selection box get selected ( which is the expected behaviour in my opinion )
The issue come when using lasso select tool : only the object that have the pivot point in the lasso selection get selected when releasing the mouse click ( which is not really convenient in many case ). Most of the time you will try to select an object with the lasso select it won't get selected because his pivot point is not in the selection.
