Short description of error
Preview window and thumbnails for material index display incorrectly in the material properties tab if the render engine is set to Eevee. This display issue does not occur if the render engine is set to Cycles and will appear as expected. Adjusting properties (base color, emission, etc) produce abnormal results.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
From startup, navigate to the material properties tab. If render engine is set to Eevee, the preview window and thumbnails beside material indexes in the above menu will display incorrectly.

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender.
Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/
Go to File β†’ Defaults β†’ Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

Unfortunately this GPU is below the minimum requirements for Blender, so we no longer provide support for it. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/
Radeon HD 5000 series has Terascale2 architecture that is before GNC (Minimum supported is "AMD: GCN 1st gen and newer").
As this GPU does not meet minimum requirement for Blender 2.9x, I feel have to close the report.
Community effort to fix the bug is welcome.
We won't stop users from running out program on unsupported hardware, but we do not handle bug reports of issues that happen when doing so.
