To the best of my recollection Blender never supported drag and drop of files of other 3D file formats. What version are you referring to, what files were you able to drag and drop in that version and what are the exact steps that used to work in that older version?

from 2.80 to 2.91 versions

You can drag and drop texture files in the shader editor in these versions. This should continue to work in Blender 2.92 and 2.93.

Importing 3D files such as *.obj, *.fbx, *.dae, etc. required and still require to use the menu entry or call the operator through Python.

Please provide step by step instructions for a use case that used to work, but doesn't work in the current version.

In my tests all features that previously worked, continue to work in Blender 2.92. Those are:

  • Drag and drop of *.blend files in the 3D View
  • Drag and drop of texture files in the 3D view
  • Drag and drop of texture files in the Shader Editor
  • Drag and drop of texture files in the Image Editor

What doesn't work, in past and present versions, as it isn't supported:

  • Drag and drop of 3D file formats that aren't *.blend
