Short description of error
The "Fade Inactive" Geometry" overlay is supposed to fade out any object that is not affected by the currently active object in any mode that is not object mode.
But if any other object has the same object data linked (same geometry) it will be faded out anyway.

In this example the quad-sphere in the center is active in edit mode. The one to the right has the same linked object data, which is why it also shows the edit mode overlays as it is the same geometry.
But since it is another object it is greyed out.

This is related to T87704 since the overlay seems to prioritise objects that are in the same mode instead of objects that share the same geometry.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Duplicate an object multiple times to have more than 2
  • Duplicate one of them with Alt + D to have their object data linked
  • Enter Edit Mode on one of those objects

It makes sense for linked objects to have the same overlay depending on the mode.
This is what happens in edit mode.
But I'm not sure if the fact that it doesn't happen in sculpt and paint modes is really a bug or something that just wasn't implemented.
In this case, this report is more of a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior.

@Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) Would be good to have @Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) have a look at this. This seemed to me like something that isn't intentional. If it's a bug or a known issue, I'm not sure.
