Short description of error
If the collection is turned off (unchecked in the outliner) in the first place, dragging it in GN would make it ignore the subsur modifier. You would need to turn on the collection (check it in the outliner) and then turn it back off to refresh it.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Based on the default startup, or you can look at the attached .blend file]
- add subsurf modifier on the defaul cube
- press M to move it to a new collection
- Shift D to deplicate it (not necessary, it is just the idea that it is a collection rather than a single object)
- Uncheck the collection in the outliner to turn it off
- add a plane and go to the GN workspace
- create a GN node tree and drag the disabled collection in, connect it to the output
- see how the cubes are not subdivided
- turn the collection back on in the outliner and turn it back off immediately, the GN cubes are now subdivided
