cpu intel core 2 quad q6600
Open Suse 10.3
Xorg 7.2
NVIDIA nx8800GT
drivers 169.12 or 170.06 , 64 bits
NVIDIA settings 'sync to Vblank' OFF
both blender 2.45, and 2.46RC, x86-64
in relatively complex scenes, when editing vertices, or curve handles, blender freezes a few seconds, then goes back to normal.
The frequency of freezes seem to increase with scene complexity, and seem to be random. sometimes a few seconds between each freeze, sometimes more.
Turning nvidia settings 'sync to Vblank' to ON seems to fix it.
Deos not seem to happen when 'hide background geometry' is OFF
Does NOT happen on my laptop which has a GeForce Go 7600.
How to reproduce :
set NVIDIA setting 'sync to Vblank' OFF
open blender, make 'hide background geometry' to ON
add a cube, subdivide like 5 times, make it subsurf level 2
add a plane in front of the cube, subdivide it, make it subsurf lvl 2
UV texture the cube with a big image
add a beveled curve with a few extruded segments
( these 3 steps to make a relavely complex scene, it seems it makes the freezes more frequent for me )
then edit the plan vertices, or the curve knots or handles. be patient, edit and edit.
the freeze should appear, then back to normal
go on editing, another freeze should happen, and so on
I join the blend file as an attachment
I have found a forum talking about it :
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=109531
as stated in the forum, it seems to only happen with blender, so I thought it might be related to blender GL code, not NVIDIA driver code.
hope this helps,
regards,
Lile

Rather, it's Blender GL code (which isn't that esoteric, mind you) which nvidia's driver chokes on, especially if it is reproducible on one card but not the other.
I have a 8600 here and never had such issue, though I guess I could try mucking around with the setting, see if I can reproduce.
Can't confirm with svn build, 7300GT, 169.12 driver. Will try with test build releases later.
We have this problem on one of the computers here too, also with a NVIDIA 8800. I think this is almost certainly a (hardware) configuration issue or a bug in the nvidia driver. Trying to debug this, it appears that the whole operating system locks up during those few seconds freeze (we tried remotely debugging with gdb, but the system simply does not respond at all during the freezing).
Also, you can find similar issues mentioned on forums with compiz. But I have not seen a good solution, in some cases it appeared to be a hardware problem, while in others fiddling with the nvidia settings helped.
I'm moving this to the OpenGL errors tracker, but I think there's very little we can do about this in Blender.
ok,thank you for having taken a look at it !
From your feedback, I understand the best might be to send the bug report to nvidia, though, I think it has already be done. I will try to dig into this.
If I have any news from them I will post a comment again here
ty again !
This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
