VDB sequences are rendered blocky here and there ( issues with Volume Displacement Modifier )
Confirmed, NormalPublicBUG

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: RTX 2070 CUDA

Blender Version
Broken: blender-3.0.0-alpha+master.ef5a362a5b24-windows.amd64-release.zip

Short description of error

Blender renders these blocky frames here and there during the actual render. The VDBs seem to be fine, the same botched render frames look fine in the viewport render. These anomolies are happening only during the actual render. See the attached image (middle right image) for what is happening please.

The same sequence renders without any issues in Houdini.

(Cycles)

Here is an actual movie render (with Eevee) that shows how horrible this issue is.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open .blend file
  2. Render sequence with CUDA

Issue should appear within 30 frames

Can you create shorter VDB sequence so file will be as small as possible?

I did not create the sequence myself. I personally think that it is important to try with the original one so we can be sure it is repeatable.

It is already 100 frames total, it is a highres VDB

Here is a borked Eevee render frame from another sequence that came from totally unrelated source.

What is interesting is that, these borked frames are not always the same frame across different render runs. They seem to be hjappening at random frames.

I think that this has something to do with the volume displacement modifier. Disabling this modifier seems to get rid of these faulty renders. I am guessing that the displacement modifier has some issues with the ranges in the voxel domain.
