When zooming from the back, it will not move past the 3d module.
When zooming from the front, it will work ok and go beyond the 3d module.
Have tried it with mouse and wacom.

Event Timeline
I'm not sure I understand the bug.
Zoom has a limited distance.
If you approach (zoom in), this distance decreases.
If you move away (zoom out), this distance increases.
If you rotate (orbit) the view, the zoom distance does not change.
If you want this zoom distance to be the distance of the selected geometry, you might prefer to enable the "Orbit Around Selection" option. This option affects zoom as well.
If you prefer this distance to be up to the geometry pointed by the mouse, you might prefer to enable "Auto Depth".

"Orbit Around Selection" didn't help.
Enabled "Depth" helped more.
Tried it on both sides.

The problem is knowing if it's a bug or a feature.
Doesn't seem like a bug to me.
The behavior could be improved, but this is not the scope of the bug tracker .
