Semi-collapse spreadsheet editor navigation tab showing icons + numbers only
Confirmed, NormalPublicTO DO

Description

In the viewport the tool region has 3 collapse/expansion levels:

  • All tools + labels
  • Only icons two columns
  • Only icons one column

For the Spreadsheet editor it would be nice to have two collapse levels:

  • All icons + name + numbers (current implementation)
  • All icons + numbers

Also, when changing that, it would be nice to make the default width of the region thinner.

There was some discussion in the chat about icons here:

I have always not understood this love of shoving icons everywhere and always, without any need, creating unnecessary visual noise, distracting and interfering with just reading the text, giving a frivolous, unprofessional look. Well, and, creating the need for additional work on drawing non-important icons. And the more items there are in this list, the more it will turn into mess.

Your screenshot with just bullets instead of icons definitely looks cleaner and a lot easier to "parse" visually. It's a good idea.

I agree. We quite often stick icons everywhere just because we have them. I find they muddy things up if not used sparingly.

Agreed, the icons don't add much other than visual noise here. If somebody wants to think about a guideline on this for the HIG, be my guest.

They will be essential when we add a view-mode that doesn't draw the text.

Uff, are you sure we want to do that? It's a bit random, we don't use it for other navigation regions. Plus, this is a single region with icons in a bunch of different styles.

Our icon process feels completely broken, no one has responsibility for it.

That's the case unfortunately. Even more reason to avoid overusing icons.
