Insufficient Memory and Crashing While in Cycles Render View or Rendering
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17763-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 472.39

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.5, branch: master, commit date: 2021-10-05 12:04, hash: rBa791bdabd0b2
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
As well as 2.9, 2.91, 2.92

Short description of error
When I try to view a file in render mode, or when I try to render in any way, I get the error that I'm out of memory or the program crashes and closes.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I can't render any of my files, even those I've rendered before. If the file is small enough, I can view it in render view when I first open the file, but after a little bit of modeling, I'm no longer able to do so, and I get the out of memory warning or the program crashes.

{F11776060}To generate this crash report, I started with an empty file using the script to start Blender with factory settings, and I disabled all my addons. Then I appended objects one by one, checking whether I could view in render view or render. I did this until the system crashed. After that, I reopened the file, turned on render view, tried to dublicate an object, and the program crashes. I can't render any of my files, even those I've rendered before.

Event Timeline

Can't confirm on a RTX 260 SUPER here. I can duplicate the whole scene twice (so in total 4x) without problem. I could try to do it even more, but it takes quite long so I stopped at 4 copies.

But this is on linux, so that mighty be different.

If I copy the whole scene 4 times ti takes 1.6GB vram (according to the status bar). Should be no problem.

Did you update your video drivers?

I have updated my drivers, yes.

Many bugs are fixed between the official releases. Please try the latest development snapshot of blender: https://builder.blender.org/download

Cycles has gone through a lot of changes these days.

Okay, I've tried it, and when I try to got to render viewport I get this error: OPTIX_ERROR_INTERNAL_COMPILER_ERROR in optixModuleCreateFromPTX(Context, &module_options, &pipeline_options, ptx_data.data(), ptx_data.size(), nullptr,0, &optix_module) (device_optix.cpp:444_

Sorry, I meant to post this a while ago, but I guess I never did! It turns out it WAS an issue with the driver. I had to do a complete uninstall re-install for it to start working again. I've had to do it a couple of times now, so I'm not sure what is going on, but whatever it is, the uninstalling/reinstall solves the problem--at least for a while.

Just to be sure: You mean a re-installation of the driver, right? Not a re-installation of blender? Because the latter thing would be strange (but interesting).

Yes, of the driver :-)

Looking at older reports, this one seems to be resolved, so will close. If issue persists, please open new report.
