When selecting an edge or vertex with "Occlude Background Geometry" enabled, Blender will select a different vertex or edge disconnected from the one I intend to select. It is consistent with certain vertexes in that it will select the same 'other' vertex every time from any camera angle, almost as if they are connected. This also occurs in border select (b) and 'circle select' (b twice).
I've had no problems with wireframe mode, nor when "Occlude Background Geometry" is disabled. When in face select mode a standard select (right click) works, however a 'circle select' (b twice) will exhibit the same problem.
I can reproduce the problem with any model, from the default cube to a complex, subsurfaced face model. The included screenshot is after clicking on the center vertex on top of the cube using the 'circle select' (b twice) tool (you can still see the tool). The cube has been subdivided twice to enhance the problem. Obviously, the two faces on the bottom left should not be selected.

Can you try disable anti-aliasing with your opengl drivers, it could be conflicting with the glSelect function.
Bingo. I didn't disable it, but I set all AA options to 'let application control' in ATI's catalyst control panel. Thanks.
I don't know if this still qualifies as a bug or not. Is it a problem with ATI, OpenGL, or Blender?
This isnt a bug in blender, ATI is known to have issues with glSelect, if the driver forces oversampling and makes glSelect return invalid results, blender cant help this.
moving to "OpenGL errors"
This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
