Description

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19042-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 496.76

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-01-25 17:19, hash: rBdc2d18018171
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
If I turn on two cubes with volume fog applied, cycles will only render one at a time

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Render with cycles and try combinations of both cubes being switched on and off. There's two cubes, one has a cloudy/noise volumetric applied, the other an even fog. If, for example, you turn on the cloudy version, and then turn on the even version, you'll only see the cloudy version. Alternatively, if you start with the even fog, then turn on the cloudy fog, it likewise won't appear in the render. In my case I'm rendering in the viewport.

update: this appears to be GPU related.

Event Timeline

Bit of an update, which may have resolved the issue. I applied the scale of the cubes and now, in cycles, they appear to be working simultaneously. So I still think this is a bug but one related to scale perhaps?

Omar Emara (OmarSquircleArt) changed the task status from Needs Triage to Needs Information from User.Feb 22 2022, 3:11 PM

Is this a CUDA/OPTIX only issue? CPU is rendering correctly?
Can you provide example renders of the different states you described? And can you try the latest daily v3.2 build and see if the issue still persists? https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Objects that are very far away or very large can cause precision problems as far as I know, but no idea if this is the case here.
There were also reports about intersecting volumes before, but they seem to be resolved already, so this may not be the case here.

No activity for more than a week. As per the tracker policy we assume the issue is gone and can be closed.

Thanks again for the report. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.
