Short description of error
weird looking materials observed when few nodes used.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Go to the blend file. add a AO node. connect it with a shader to rgb.
add a mix rgb and connect a diffuse with fac using a shader to rgb.

Sorry, not clear exactly where these nodes should be inserted.
Maybe you should just share a second .blend file where these have already been inserted (so we have "before" and "after" versions?).

You could also try to explain what the expected outcome of such a shader would look like (versus the outcome that you are currently seeing...)
