System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.15

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2022-05-22 19:10, hash: rB84e55e3dc251
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I get this error when I try to render with cycles using GPU rendering with denoising:

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

I was working on this file on another PC and it was rendering most of the time. Had same amount of ram, similar CPU but it had an RTX 2060. I have two GTX 1070s. If I ever get these memory bugs I just restart Blender and it works fine. But this time, on my PC, it refuses. I've optimized the scene as much as I can pretty much. No textures above 4k.

The file is for a client so is under NDA and if all textures were embedded it would be over a gb in file size.

Event Timeline

update: ah, I forgot that Blender doesn't like dual GPUs. That said, if I use just one GPU I get this error:

So the above error is usually remedied by a restart. This seemed to work but now, when rendering in the viewport with cycles I get this error

But that's not repeatable and it works ok now in the viewport.

All in all, I get these kinds of errors way too often and I don't think there's anything that can be done about it other than maybe buying the most powerful GPU on the market just for a fairly basic scene.

Does installing the latest NDIVIA studio drivers instead of the game ready drivers makes this problem go away?

Now I get flash crashes. But that's fairly standard.

just an insta-crash. Happens while moving/editing objects while viewport is rendering in cycles.

edit: this happens across different PCs though, it's just a normal situation in heavier scenes.

does Blender automatically store crash logs? I can't seem to find mine. I thought you had to run blender in a certain mode. I looked up files from the link but just found two empty folders.

Yes, it does that automatically. But I guess it may fail sometimes. I will just leave this report for someone with the hardware.

With beta/alpha build you can run file blender_debug_log.cmd which will create and debug log and system info files. Can you upload these?
Aslo is it possible to simplify .blend file so it can be shared? Without sample .blend file we can't investigate the problem.

ok, I've more or less finished working on that last file now so I'll pick things back up when my next scene starts bugging.

@Andrew Walsh (andywalshart) Sure feel free to share data when you can. Just a note that policy on tracker is that reports should be no longer than week without activity, so this may be closed, in which case feel free to open new report. Or we can close now if you think this will take some time.

It seems my new card is keeping these issues at bay for now. Although sometimes there's some unexpected slow down and it can take a lot of re-starting Blender to get a render to actually work. I do have a question though that I'm struggling to find a definitive answer to. If I bought a 2nd RTX 3060, would Blender definitely make use of it? or does it just cap at one card's memory? I gather the 3090s though have the technology to link up, but that aside? I used to have regular crashes while using two 1070s which would be instantly remedied by turning one of them off. Hard to get solid info in this area.

Is this still an issue with new HW?

Sorry for not answering dual GPU question - I have no good info to provide. Technically it should work, I have not seen too many reports of this not working properly, but I can imagine it's much less used feature as well.

No activity for more than a week. As per the tracker policy we assume the issue is gone and can be closed.

Thanks again for the report. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.
