@Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) @Campbell Barton (campbellbarton) I think this is definitely worth looking into again. A number of addon developers are looking forward to using face sets for their tools.

@Clément Foucault (fclem) I would greatly appreciate it if this fix can make it for the next LTS. It's a critical EEVEE fix for me and several other artists.

I'm all for this addition, but I feel like the depth could be visualized better so there's less guesswork - similar to the cursor for the layer brush

@Clément Foucault (fclem) Do you think this is a known issue? I'm surprised no one encountered this same problem when it's been around since EEVEE was created. I have another example from a render from 2.81.
SSR is also not enabled in the scene, so it can't be related to that issue either
I don't think this issue has to do with Subsurface Translucency, because it's not enabled for either of the two objects
