Further confirmation. You can always exit the grey screen normally by selecting "Back to Previous".

Thanks for the comment. I did find an even better font called "Source Code Pro" which is mono sized in both horizontal and vertical directions.

You might have a point on the font being uglier. I just chose it because it was blockier (i.e., more squarish). I also had trouble matching the background shading of the selected tab using only LibreOffice draw. The shade of grey does not match and it does not totally cover the whole tab.

Your mockup of generating vertical tabs with Python looks great.
It easily and gracefully accomplishes the goal of not taking away valuable horizontal space for the toolbars.
