Yes it works better that way on Win10, but not on OSX 10.11. Even entering manually the values make Blender crash on OSX. Mouse sliding make Blender crash on both OS.
Ok, finally I can provide a blend file for testing. Appending worked fine with the head mesh and one plan.

I'm fine with the fact that alternative start/end frames are for preview, but shouldn't we have something to warn us that particle systems won't be correct in that case? Or disabling particles when using the alternative start/end frames? Or something else to avoid doing the same mistake I did... Or maybe I missed it.

I tried using the default config of Blender (default UI and default addons activated) and the render works fine too. So maybe the problem is related to the addons, my personnal UI theme or the preferences... or else.
