I found the source of the problem, its not a bug, but it did bug the heck out of me. The problem was the vertices' mean radius was set at .664 instead of .5 (i think that would be the default value?) Once the value was reset, the extrusion and viewport values are consistent.

Well, that worked!!
Apparently another add-on interferes with the animation node somehow. I renamed the folder as suggested, got animation node to install without any problems, then i copied the other add-ons back into the new folder. sure enough, the box was unticked again and i got the same error. So my next step is to install add-ons one at a time and see witch one screws it up. I'll let you know what i find. Thanks LazyDodo.
I installed it on a win 10 64 machine at the office, in the same 2.79 official build as the one that is not working at home and it installed right away.
Both machines are identical as far as hardware is concerned, just a different OS.

Tried on the latest build (blender-2.79-55696b56-win64) The error now states that there is a python mismatch. The animation node was compiled for 3.5.3 and the current version in the build is 3.6.2

The terms "movie clip" next to "image" are confusing because one would not necessarily assume you can only input a fixed length movie
ex: the proper frame count, needing no fine tuning, when you have another option available but under "Image"...gawd i hope that makes sence...
Your screen capture got me puzzled and curious as to why the color space info for the movie clip was not showing, so i checked a few more options then noticed you could load a video as an image sequence and sure enaugh , all the options remained in place. so the basic problem seems to come from one too many buttons (movie clip) next to image. weird.

The file did not have maximum compatibility on, my bad, got several versions of PS on a number of machines and this one did not have it turned on, like all the others. Once the feature was set to always, i restarted PS,I created a brand new file with several solid layers, text, and a few imported images and it worked fine. WOOT!
