**Short description of error**
Blender sees the nvidia card for CUDA cycles rendering, but it only gives a "none" option in the Opensudiv settings. Deactivating Optimus in the BIOS settings makes Opensubdiv work properly, but this is not ok since it deactivates Optimus, which is preferred for laptops.
I don't know if this is common for Optimus users. But it's consistent on my laptop. I even restored it to a factory default install and the problem persists. Only by deactivating Optimus will Opensubdiv work here.
