This can be creating a new object or simply selecting an already existing one. The functions that get affected seem very random, some of the ones I've encountered is that I can't orbit with the middle mouse wheel anymore, I can't use my page forwards button on my mouse that's used in a shortcut and I can't view a camera's perspective with num0.
