UPDATE 2017-06-12
Resolved this issue by resetting to Factory Default. It appears that if I simply unzipped the download and opened Blender it would crash every time I pressed Shift Z, or F12 in CPU and GPU. It would also crash if i clicked on certain buttons such as the World button or certain buttons in the Tool Shelf.
I discovered that if I opened my old models Blender seemed stable. So I reset to Factory Settings and now Blender seems stable even in the startup with just a cube, camera, and light.
Something in the startup or creating a new object Blender didn't like, but seemed OK if I opened an existing model. Weird.
I now feel I can continue testing Blender 2.78.5
**System Information**
Operating system and graphics card: Windows 10 NVIDIA 970
**Blender Version**
Broken: Blender 2.7.8.5
Worked:
**Short description of error**
I'm only using the default cube and light. I have a high end gamming desk top with 18 GB of memory. In GPU and CPU mode pressing Shift-Z just displays a black screen. Pressing F12 in GPU and CPU mode crashes Blender.
A couple of days ago, pressing Shift-Z In CPU mode displayed the cube but the latest download only causes a black screen.
When I was testing 2.78.4 both Shift Z and F12 worked fine in GPU and CPU.
Blender 2.78c works fine in both CPU and GPU and F12 works as expected.
Therefore, I believe there is a bug in the 2.78.5 build that causes Blender to fail when using either CPU or GPU and my 970 card because 2.78c and 2.78.4 work OK.
I've updated NVIDIA drivers, I've reinstalled the latest Git Hub version multiple times. I'm only using the default cube, a camera and a sun light. I can't go back to 2.78.4 because it's no longer available. But 2.78c works fine.
Blender 2.78.5 also crashes when I click on certain buttons will in object and edit modes, but I can't remember what they were because it happens so fast. The instant I click certain buttons, Blender disappears. If there is an error log, I can't find it.
